Why I don’t Like John McCain
In the past, I liked John McCain. However, McCain’s actions during this Presidential Campaign, and the lead up to it have soured me on him. The McCain that I liked, the one who called the Religious Right “Agents of Intolerance” is dead. McCain has replaced it with a facade of anything for the presidency. I think that this willingness to sell out one’s beliefs speaks very ill of their fitness to be president. I feel that if you were willing to comprise your principals to become President I would hate to see what you would do once you were President, or what you would do to keep the job. While it is possible that this McCain is the true McCain, and McCain’s past image was just another facade created to win the presidency. I don’t think that this is the case. In the past, one of McCain’s main issues was campaign finance reform. This is an issue that one of the two main interests of the Republican Party, large corporations and their executives are strongly against. McCain was also against President (and our beloved fearless leader) George W. Bush’s program of tax cuts in 2001. This is another point that McCain would not have held if he was just pretending to be a moderate, because this is another issue that would anger the corporate side of the Republican party. McCain now wants to stop these tax cuts from expiring, further evidence of the depth of his desire to become president, and his willingness to sell out his beliefs to do so. While all of the major Republican candidates had to flip flop to some degree, McCain really lead the pack in this makeover.
Another thing that I don’t like McCain is that he is strongly in favor of attacking Iran. This is most visibly shown by his singing about wanting to bomb Iran. As a pacifist, I find this deplorable, and despicable, and something that no sane should ever joke about. In my opinion, (which you obviously want since you are reading my blog) making a joke about something that could lead to the death of hundreds of thousands of people should disqualify McCain from holding any type of public office, especially one in which he would be able to control the release of nuclear weapons.
Now, don’t just think that I am saying bad things about McCain because I am a supporter of another candidate. I feel that none of the candidates running for the office of the president are fit to hold that office. I know that all of the candidates currently will probably behave exactly the same once they get in office. I hold no illusions that Hillary Clinton or Barrack Obama would be any less likely to attack Iran than McCain, or that they will magically decide to disassemble the massive surveillance and national security state that President Bush assembled.
